Strong roots help us grow

The Cantina Sociale Cesanese del Piglio was created in 1960 thanks to a group of winemakers with the goal of creating high quality wines using the native grape varieties of the area around Piglio. From the start, the cooperative of winemakers strengthened their ties to the territory by promoting Cesanese del Piglio wine until it became a Denominazione di Origine Controllata DOC in 1973.

In 2008, Cesanese del Piglio became the only red wine to achieve Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita DOCG status in the Region of Lazio.

Still today, a significant amount of DOCG wine is produced at this winery, approximately 250,000 bottles per year. Using the grapes that are in part conferred by members and in part purchased on the market, the Cantina Sociale offers important outsourcing services to local companies for producing their own labels. There are about a dozen wineries of this type.

The Cantina Sociale was the very first founding member of the Consorzio di tutela (producers association) for the Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, which is also known as simply Piglio
